neutrons released, and the possibility of a nuclear chain reaction. 

In 1937, he left the Radium Institute, and formed his own lab. There he continued work on chain reactions, and built the first cyclotron in Western Europe. He directed the construction of the first French
atomic pile (reactor) in 1948.

 He died on August 14, 1958.
